Imagine: you're proud of a +45% growth in organic traffic over the year, and then with one click you find out that 38% of that traffic is people who already know your brand and are searching for it by name. And the real "cold" traffic from content has only grown by 7%. 🤯
The good news is that since November 20, 2025, Google has given us a button that instantly separates these two worlds. 🔗 Announcement here. The bad news is that many people are still just writing a summary of the announcement.
We'll go further: we'll show you how to actually use this filter to understand whether your content is growing or just the brand.
⚡ In short

- ✅ No regex and manual cleaning — everything is automatic
- ✅ The main value is to see how much traffic is brought specifically by content, and not by brand loyalty

🕵️ What is this filter and why did it appear now?
- 📅 On November 20, 2025, Google announced a new filter in the Search Central Blog: Performance → Query → Branded / Non-branded queries.
- 🧠 Main change: AI now automatically determines whether a query contains a brand, product, domain, or misspelling, replacing manual regex.
- ✅ How it works: One click — and the data is ready for analysis, no need to spend hours cleaning queries.
How AI classifies real queries (international examples, November–December 2025):
| Query | Google Classification (2025) | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| amazon | Branded | brand name 🏷️ |
| amazon prime login | Branded | even with the product name 📦 |
| online shopping usa | Non-branded | no brand mention 🛒 |
| ebay shoes | Branded | domain/brand in the query 👟 |
| chatgpt | Branded | OpenAI considers this a brand 🤖 |
| free ai chatbot | Non-branded | pure topic 💬 |
| grok ai | Non-branded (for now) | Google doesn't consider "grok" a strong brand yet 🚀 |
| youtube premium | Branded | Google product = branded 🎬 |
| stream movies online free | Non-branded | topic without a brand 🍿 |
| example.com | Branded | your domain is always branded 🏠 |
These examples are taken from Search Console projects over the past week. If the brand is already known in the world (Amazon, ChatGPT, YouTube), almost all queries with its name will go to branded. If you are a new or niche project (grok, perplexity, claude), some branded queries may temporarily fall into non-branded — AI will fix this over time. 📈
Why separate branded and non-branded traffic at all?
I think that without this separation, you have no chance of understanding what exactly you are paying money and time for. 💰
- ✔️ Branded traffic — these are those who already know you by name. They are looking for "rozetka", "chatgpt", "grok ai", your domain or product name. This is an indicator of brand strength, loyalty and the effectiveness of advertising/social media/PR. 👑
- ✔️ Non-branded traffic — these are new people who came through useful content and have never heard of you before. This is the only honest indicator of whether your SEO and content marketing are working. 🎯
As long as you only look at the overall organic traffic, you live in an illusion. 😵💫
Examples from projects I've seen in the past week (December 2025)
- Educational blog, 420+ articles → total organic traffic +52% per year
Branded +91%, non-branded −11% → all growth was driven by the YouTube channel and mentions in the media 📺 - SaaS startup (AI chatbot) → total organic traffic +180%
Branded +340%, non-branded −23% → realized that the content strategy failed 📉 - Online clothing store → total organic traffic +34%
Branded −8%, non-branded +77% → content and SEO work perfectly, you can scale 🚀 - News portal → branded 12%, non-branded 88% → classic content site that lives on "cold" traffic 📰
- Medical information site → branded 68% → it turned out that most people are looking for the clinic itself, not the articles → they moved the budget from content to local SEO 🏥
What your typical distribution will look like
- Online stores and marketplaces → 45–75% branded 🛍️
- Content sites and blogs → 10–35% branded ✍️
- New SaaS projects (up to 3 years) → 15–40% branded ✨
- Well-known media and aggregators → less than 20% branded 🌐
My conclusion is simple:
If your non-branded traffic is less than 40–50% and is not growing — your content is not bringing in new users. You are just feeding the existing audience. 🍎
The new filter in GSC is the first official button from Google that removes the rose-colored glasses and shows the truth. Next — a step-by-step instruction on how to see this truth in 60 seconds. ⏱️
🗺️ Step-by-step instructions: where to find and how to use the filter
Attention: the function is not available to everyone at once! ⚠️ The filter is being rolled out gradually from November 20, 2025 — full coverage is expected by the end of December. If the option is not yet available, check:
- Property type — only top-level (URL-prefix or Domain, not a subdomain) 🌐
- Traffic volume — usually you need at least 5–10 thousand impressions per month + enough branded queries 📊
- Rollout — just wait 1–4 weeks (or update GSC) ⏳
If there is little traffic yet — use the good old regex filter by brand name. This is a temporary but working hack. 🛠️
- Go to Google Search Console → Performance ⚙️
- Click the blue "+ New" button → "Query" ➕
- Select "Branded queries" or "Non-branded queries" 🏷️
- (Optional) Add a second filter for comparison: "+ New" again → opposite type 🔄
- Go to the "Queries" or "Pages" tab — done, clean data is in front of you ✨
My advice is to combine with filters by country, device or date, and then export to Google Sheets — this makes it easier to build charts. 📈

💡 How to read the results: 4 key metrics and what they really say about your site
Opened the filter — saw the numbers. Now the main thing: not just to look, but to understand whether it is good or bad. Here is a transcript of each metric specifically for content sites and blogs (data from 50+ projects for December 2025). 👇
🔑 Metrics and norms (Content sites, December 2025)
| Metric | Branded (norm) | Non-branded (norm) |
|---|---|---|
| Share of clicks from all organic traffic | 15–45% | 55–85% |
| CTR (click-through rate) | 10–30% | 1.2–5% |
| Average position | 1.0–4.0 | 5–14 |
🎯 Diagnostics of deviations and actions
| Problem (Indicator) | What the deviation means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| **Low share of Non-branded clicks** | Non-branded < 40% → your content brings few new people | Urgently scale content clusters and internal linking 🔗 |
| **Low Non-branded CTR** | Non-branded CTR < 1% → titles and meta descriptions are not catchy | Rewrite title/meta for the top 50 non-branded pages → +20–40% clicks in 1–2 months ✍️ |
| **High Non-branded position** | Non-branded > 15 → content does not match the intent or is outdated | Update/expand articles that are hanging in 8–20 positions — this is the fastest traffic increase ⬆️ |
| **Number of impressions (Impressions)** | Few non-branded impressions → you are writing on too narrow topics or weak semantics | Expand semantics: tools → KeyCollector / Ahrefs → new clusters for 50–100 articles 🔭 |
🚀 Quick diagnosis in 30 seconds
- Non-branded < 40% clicks → your site lives off a loyal audience. Content urgently needs a boost. 🆘
- Non-branded CTR < 1.5% → the problem is in the snippets → rewrite the titles. 📝
- Non-branded position > 15 → you need to update old content (especially that affected by HCU). ⏳
- Non-branded > 70% clicks + CTR > 3% → you are in the top 5% of content sites in Ukraine. Scale! 🥇
