AdSense rejected my website webscraft.org five times in a row — each time sending almost the same standard response without specific explanations of what exactly needs to be fixed. On forums, I've encountered stories of webmasters who managed to connect AdSense only after ten or more rejections. On October 15, 2026, I applied to Journey by Mediavine and received approval that same evening. At the same time, I know AdSense not by hearsay: it works on my other project. This article is a comparison of two platforms from someone who has experience with both.
⚡ In Short: What to Choose
- ✅ New site with no traffic — AdSense: no minimum traffic threshold.
- ✅ 1,000+ sessions per month and AdSense rejections — Journey by Mediavine: low entry barrier, and approval is more transparent.
- ⚠️ Want full control over ad placement — AdSense: in Journey, placement is managed automatically.
- 🌍 Audience primarily not from the US — income will be modest on any platform; geography matters more than the network choice.

👤 Who I Am and What I'm Comparing
I am a Java backend developer and run the technical blog webscraft.org — a multilingual site on Spring Boot, without WordPress. My experience with both platforms is as follows:
- AdSense on webscraft.org — five rejections in a row with the same generic email "something needs to be fixed." Google never stated the reason.
- Journey by Mediavine on webscraft.org — application submitted on October 15, 2026, approval received the same evening, ads have been running since that day.
Therefore, in this article, I rely on my own experience where available, and on official sources where it is not. Journey income figures will appear after the first month of operation.
📖 What are Google AdSense and Journey by Mediavine
Google AdSense is Google's advertising program for website owners. You place ad code, Google displays ads from advertisers, and shares revenue with you. The platform does not set a minimum traffic threshold for all sites, but each site must comply with content quality requirements and program policies. Official Google AdSense Requirements.
Journey by Mediavine is an advertising platform for growing websites from Mediavine. According to current requirements, participation requires at least 1,000 premium sessions in 30 days, connected GA4, original content that is brand-safe, an engaged audience, and regular updates. Grow is not mentioned in the application requirements, but it is mandatory for displaying Journey ads. Current Journey by Mediavine Requirements.
Important: Connection conditions, traffic requirements, and application processes may change. Check the current policies on the official websites of the advertising platforms before registering. This article presents conditions valid as of October 15, 2026.

✅ Requirements and Approval Process
AdSense
Google checks the site for compliance with its policies: content quality and volume, navigation, mandatory pages, absence of prohibited topics. The main problem is transparency. My five rejections on webscraft.org came with the same general text, without a specific reason. I had to guess what exactly to fix.
Between applications, I checked and changed everything that could hinder the verification:
- checked
robots.txt so that the AdSense crawler had access to the pages;
- added blocks for site verification — the meta tag
google-adsense-account and AdSense code to the templates;
- configured
ads.txt with my publisher line;
- filled out the questionnaire again and submitted the site for verification several times.
The result was the same every time — a generic email without explanation. I never found out the real reason, so I won't invent one.
Journey by Mediavine
Here's how it went for me:
- I created a Grow account and installed its script on all site pages.
- Connected Google Analytics 4 — Mediavine uses its data to evaluate traffic.
- Submitted the application through publishers.mediavine.com/join.
- A few hours later, I received approval and completed the onboarding: site data, privacy policy, ad script,
ads.txt, identity verification.
Compared to AdSense, the difference is noticeable: instead of a generic email without explanation, there is a clear application status in the dashboard and clear steps after approval.
Official Journey requirements: at least 1,000 premium sessions in 30 days, connected GA4, original content that is brand-safe, an engaged audience, and regular updates. Sites on incompatible CMS (e.g., Wix or Blogspot), sites with serious brand safety issues or excessive AI use are automatically rejected. At the same time, Mediavine emphasizes that approval is not just about meeting minimums, but the overall picture of the audience and the site. Current Journey Requirements.
Grow is not mentioned in the application requirements, but it is mandatory for displaying Journey ads. On the Journey homepage, they recommend running Grow for at least 30 days. I was approved the same day — likely because GA4 already had traffic history. But this is my case, not a rule.
📐 How Revenue is Calculated: Page RPM vs. Session RPM
The most common mistake when comparing AdSense and Mediavine is to directly compare their RPMs. Both networks earn from ad impressions and clicks, but they display your revenue in reports differently:
- Page RPM (AdSense) — revenue per 1,000 page views.
- Session RPM (Mediavine) — revenue per 1,000 sessions, i.e., visits.
The difference between them lies in the number of pages a reader opens per visit.
Example: Same Money, Different RPMs
⚠️ The numbers are hypothetical and rounded — just to illustrate the mechanics. This is not a revenue forecast.
Let's imagine a website for a month:
- 10,000 sessions;
- an average of 1.5 pages per session — meaning 15,000 page views;
- ad revenue — $30.
| Metric |
Calculation |
Result |
| Page RPM |
30 ÷ 15,000 × 1,000 |
$2 |
| Session RPM |
30 ÷ 10,000 × 1,000 |
$3 |
The website is the same, the money is the same — but the RPMs differ by 1.5 times. Exactly by how many pages a reader opens per session on average.
Recalculation Formula
Session RPM = Page RPM × pages per session
And vice versa: Page RPM = Session RPM ÷ pages per session.
The number of pages per session can be calculated in GA4: page views ÷ sessions for the same period.
How This is Misleading
Suppose someone writes: "My RPM in AdSense is $4, and in Journey it's $6, which is 50% more." If readers on their site open an average of 1.5 pages per session, then a page RPM of $4 is a session RPM of $6. The revenues are the same, and the "50% increase" is simply a difference in metrics.
Therefore, when reading others' revenue reports, always check which specific RPM they are referring to.
What to Compare Actually
- ✅ Total monthly revenue with the same traffic — the most honest metric.
- ✅ RPM of the same type — page with page or session with session, after recalculating using the formula above.
- ✅ The same period — at the end of the year, advertising budgets grow, at the beginning of the year they fall, so comparing October with January is incorrect.
Why Session Depth is Your Lever
From the formula, it's clear: the more pages a reader opens per visit, the more ads they see, and the higher the session RPM. Internal links between articles, "Read also" blocks, and Grow recommendations directly increase revenue from each visitor — regardless of which network you choose.
Another Trap: CPM is Not RPM
In reports and forums, CPM often appears alongside RPM, and they are easily confused:
- CPM — how much an advertiser pays for 1,000 impressions of a single ad unit. This is the advertiser's price.
- RPM — how much you receive per 1,000 page views or sessions from all units combined, after the network's commission. This is your revenue.
There are usually several ad units on one page, so RPM can be higher than the CPM of a single unit. Or it can be lower — if some units didn't fill or the reader didn't scroll to them. Therefore, the phrase "CPM in my niche is $5" tells you nothing about your revenue per page.
How to Compare AdSense and Journey on Your Site
If you're switching from AdSense to Journey, you can compare revenues fairly in four steps:
- Take your AdSense revenue for the last full month — the final one, not the previous one: AdSense finalizes monthly revenue at the beginning of the next month, and the final amount may differ from the preliminary one.
- Take the number of sessions for the same month from GA4.
- Calculate your "AdSense session RPM": revenue ÷ sessions × 1,000.
- After a month of Journey's operation, compare it with its session RPM from the Mediavine dashboard.
This way, both figures will be of the same type and from the same site. Remember seasonality: if you measured AdSense in October and Journey in January, part of the difference will be simply due to the season.
What Can Distort the Calculation
- 🤖 Bots in GA4. If a portion of "sessions" are bots that don't display ads, your RPM will be underestimated. Filter bots, for example, through Cloudflare.
- 🚫 Ad blockers. Sessions with ad blockers are recorded in GA4 but do not generate revenue. In technical niches, there are noticeably more such readers.
- 📅 Incomplete periods. Compare full calendar months, not "last 30 days" in one system and a calendar month in another.
- ✂️ Deductions for invalid traffic. Networks may deduct clicks and impressions deemed invalid from revenue — they are no longer included in the final amount.
Section Conclusion: Page RPM and session RPM are two different rulers for the same money. Compare either total revenue with the same traffic, or RPM of the same type, recalculated using the formula. Any "2-3x increase" without specifying which RPM is being compared should be viewed skeptically.
💰 How Much You Can Earn and How to Calculate Your Revenue
⏳ Section is being updated. I connected Journey by Mediavine on October 15, 2026, and will be publishing real figures from my dashboard: session RPM, revenue, and traffic distribution by country.
- 📊 Month 1: [link — coming soon]
- 📊 Month 2: [link — coming soon]
Why I don't provide "average RPM": it depends on so many factors that someone else's figure will tell you almost nothing about your site. Instead, here's how to calculate your own.
Formula
Monthly Revenue = (sessions ÷ 1,000) × session RPM
What Affects RPM
- 🌍 Audience Geography — the strongest factor. Advertisers pay many times more for readers from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Scandinavia than for readers from Eastern Europe.
- 🎯 Niche — finance, insurance, B2B software attract expensive advertisers; entertainment content attracts cheaper ones.
- 📅 Season — advertising budgets grow at the end of the year, RPM usually falls at the beginning of the year.
- 📄 Session Depth — a reader who opens three articles sees three times more ads.
- 📱 Devices — desktops and mobiles monetize differently.
- 🚫 Ad blockers — in technical niches, a significant portion of readers use them, and these sessions generate zero revenue.
How to Estimate Revenue for Your Site
- Open GA4 → Reports → Users → Demographics → Country and see what percentage of traffic is from Tier-1 countries.
- Look at the average number of page views per session.
- After the first week of advertising, take your actual session RPM from the network's dashboard.
- Multiply by monthly sessions using the formula — this will be your realistic forecast.
The first 1-2 weeks are not indicative: the system is just learning from your traffic.
⚡ Impact on Site Speed and UX
⏳ Section is being updated. One month after launch, I will compare PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) on mobile and desktop before and after connecting ads.
What's already visible in the first few days:
- Grow and Mediavine scripts load asynchronously and do not block page rendering;
- the mobile "sticky" banner overlapped floating buttons — they had to be raised via CSS;
- Mediavine reserves space for ads so that text doesn't "jump" during loading.
🎛️ Ad Control and Exclusivity
AdSense offers a choice: you can manually place ad units in your template, enable Auto ads, or combine both options. AdSense is not exclusive — it can be used with other revenue sources.
Journey works differently: ad placement is managed by Mediavine's automation, and publishers have almost no settings. Furthermore, Journey is exclusive for display advertising — before connecting, you must completely remove AdSense code and other ad network codes, otherwise, you won't pass verification.
This is a compromise: less control, but also less optimization work.
🛡️ Invalid Traffic: Rules That Are the Same for Both Networks
Both networks do not pay for invalid traffic (IVT) and can block your account for it. The basic rules are the same:
- ❌ never click on your own ads or ask friends to do so;
- ❌ do not reload pages to "check" ads;
- ❌ do not encourage readers to click on ads;
- ✅ filter bots, for example, through Cloudflare.

⚙️ Installation on Non-WordPress Sites
All Mediavine instructions are written for WordPress, where everything is installed via a plugin. On a custom-built site, you need to do three things:
- Add the Grow script and the Mediavine ad script to the
<head> of all pages — preferably through a shared template fragment.
- Configure
/ads.txt as a 301 redirect to the file managed by Mediavine — they often update their partner list.
- Completely remove AdSense code.
A step-by-step breakdown of connecting Mediavine Journey to a Spring Boot site with code examples is in my practical case study.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I use AdSense and Journey at the same time?
No. Journey is exclusive for display ads: you need to remove the AdSense code before connecting.
Does Journey work without WordPress?
Yes. Grow and the ad script are installed using standard <script> tags on any site.
Does the site have to be in English?
No, Journey accepts sites in any language. However, income depends on the geography of readers.
When is the first payment in Journey?
Payments follow the Net 65 schedule: income for a month is paid on the first business day 65 days after the end of the month. If the amount is less than $100, it is carried over to the following months.
Why does AdSense reject without explanation?
The rejection letter is usually general. The specific reason can sometimes be seen in the AdSense account under the "Sites" section or in the Policy Center — check both places.
Can I later switch from Journey to the main Mediavine network?
Yes. The main Mediavine network is available to sites with $5,000+ in annual ad revenue.
